Secret Stash – Breckenridge Ski Resort Turns 50

Breckenridge has much to celebrate this season, including 50 years of skiing with its official birthday taking place next month on December 16. This historic date in 1961 was when the resort officially opened to the public for skiing. The conception of building a ski resort in Breckenridge began during the late 1950s, when Bill Rounds of the Porter and Rounds Lumber Company became interested in bringing skiing to the valley. The Peak 8 Ski Area (as it was first known) opened on December 16, 1961 with one Heron double chair and a midway unloading station in addition to one short learners T-bar . Breck Snowflake Challenge Returns December 9-16

The 4 th annual Breckenridge Snowflake Challenge brings snow sculpting back to its roots and onto the streets of downtown Breckenridge this December as a fun kick-off and warm-up to the International Snow Sculpting Championships event late January. Sculpting sites throughout Main Street and downtown Breckenridge truly come to life over the course of the competition with amazing creations, adding to the beauty and surroundings of our perfect mountain town. The Breck Snowflake Challenge is produced by Breckenridge Associates Real Estate and the founders of Breckenridge’s International Snow Sculpture Championships as a means to develop a new generation of snow artists. 4th Annual Dew Tour Hits Breckenridge December 15-18

In its 4th year of showcasing the world’s top freeski and snowboard athletes competing in slopestyle and superpipe events, the Winter Dew Tour kicks off its nationwide tour once again at Breckenridge Ski Resort from December 15-18, 2011.  The Winter Dew Tour consists of three major, multi-sport events spanning across the country, with a cumulative points system and a $1.5 million competitive purse. Each event features snowboard and freeskiing competitors in slopestyle and superpipe events. At season’s end, the overall point’s leaders are crowned year-end champions and awarded the prestigious Dew Cup. Public events complement the competitions, including the Festival Village, specialty competitions, and live music and parties in town.
